I create for a living from Boise, Idaho. Originally from the great Garden State, I once backpacked around the world, and my favorite word is mbula (pronounced mm-boola), a Fijian greeting and treat for the ears.
I’ve written for a diverse set of outlets, including Men’s Journal, Yoga Journal, Playboy, Billboard and many more. I’ve also written, directed and produced short films that have played in numerous film festivals, including the Oscar-qualifying fest, Cinequest, as well as directing two entertainment-focused web series for pop culture site Uproxx.com, and commercials for companies such as Comcast.
I’ve worked with a diverse set of brands, lending my wordsmith, ideation and branding skills to UCLA Anderson School of Management, Whole Foods, Two Tumbleweeds, Manifesto! Wines and many more.
I started my career with Universal Studios as a project coordinator for a theme park in Japan, and project work has, in lesser and greater ways, been a part of all I’ve done since.
“Well, heck, that’s a lot of different stuff this guy’s done.” Hell, yes.
A career specialist might say, “You need to focus on one thing, or people won’t understand your career.” Hell, no.
Creators take it all in, spin it about in the grey-matter tumbler of ideas, and then hand you something new, something unique, something built from connections made deep in a mind with diverse experiences and knowledge.
I’ve been told that makes me a Renaissance man. Not sure about that. But, I do know my career to date has afforded me remarkable opportunities to develop a well-rounded, broadly based, Renaissance-style skillset. I like to call it whole-brain thinking.
By the way, if you find yourself in Fiji beware of kava. It tastes like dirty socks. But it’s also pretty darn fun.
